Some 80% of ESADE law students find work before graduating; more than half of the job offers originate in the Career Forum
Despite Spain’s high unemployment rate and the overall economic panorama, a large number of law firms visit Spanish universities in search of talent. Over the last five years, an average of 80% of ESADE Law School students have found a job before completing their studies.
The recruitment events organized by the school are a good platform for entering the job market. Indeed, more than half of the opportunities that ultimately become job offers for ESADE Law School students originate in the ESADE Law Career Forum, which takes place over the course of three days.
In recent days, 30 top law firms have been at the school for the twelfth edition of the Career Forum, which is attended by students from the Law School’s various programmes, including the bachelor’s degree in Law, the master’s degree in Legal Practice, and the various postgraduate programmes.
High job placement rate
Some 98.5% of the students in the first graduating class of the master’s programme in Legal Practice have found junior positions at prestigious firms, even though they have not yet sat the compulsory national bar exam. They can be broken down by functional area as follows: tax law (14.4%), business law (55%), labour law (10.1%), procedural law (8.6%), criminal law (4.3%), public law (4.3%) and civil law (2.8%).
With regard to postgraduate students who completed their studies in the 2012/13 academic year, 64.52% are also actively employed. Of this group, 83.33% are graduates of the master’s programme in Tax Consultancy and Management, 55.33% of the master’s programme in International Business Law, and 55% of the master’s programme in Intellectual Property and the Information Society.
Junior profiles are the most heavily sought after at this job forum. The ideal candidate is a recent graduate with a specialized master’s degree or postgraduate certificate in law and a strong command of English, who works well alone and in groups, is motivated and eager to learn, and has a good academic record. The ability to adapt to changing environments and international experience, whether via an exchange programme, a work placement or personal experience, are other factors that companies take into account.
Training experts in international law
Beginning in the 2014/15 academic year, ESADE Law School will offer a new double bachelor’s degree in Law and Global Governance, to focus on law, geopolitics and the international economy, in which students will spend time at overseas universities and will be able to specialize by region (Asia, North Africa, the Middle East, Latin America or the Commonwealth countries).
The new programme aims to train legal experts in international transactions for international consulting firms, NGOs and companies that operate in the global arena. ESADE thus continues to adapt to the sector’s ever-increasing demand for mobility.
A pioneering encounter
The ESADE Law Career Forum is a benchmark event in the legal sector, and this year marks its twelfth anniversary. The event is held to give students of the Law School’s bachelor’s degree programme, master’s programme in Legal Practice and postgraduate courses first-hand access to high-level firms in the sector in order to help them learn more about their plans, offers, needs and selection processes. It includes corporate presentations and networking events and is an excellent platform for meeting recruiters face-to-face.
This year’s Law Career Forum will take place over three consecutive days and will include numerous presentations and workshops.
