How to close the gap between the reality of the prison system and tomorrow’s lawyers? With the aim of moving from theory to experience, five prisoners and two social educators attended a session with law students prepared by Marc García, who teaches the subject ‘Criminal law’ at ESADE Law School.

The inmates include two of the men featured in the documentary film Filosofia a la presó (Philosophy in Prison), winner of the SEMINCI award, which chronicles the eleven weekly meetings held between ESADE Law School students and seven inmates from Lledoners prison as part of the subject ‘From thought to action’, which this academic year is following the same format. Joined by Sira Abenoza, who teaches the subject, the men featured in the documentary reflect on concepts such as identity, happiness, fear, justice and the meaning of life. Filosofia a la presó illustrates the personal journeys, the changing attitudes, and, especially, the impact that the inmates’ reality has had on students and their view of and approach to their future profession.

Incorporating reality into the classroom in innovative ways is one of the main objectives of ESADE’s current educational proposal. Through sessions such as this one, students have the chance to access a unique and participatory form of learning.
