In recognition of his articles published in the Spanish newspaper ABC, José M. de Areilza, Professor at ESADE Law School, has received the Antonio Fontán Journalism Award, granted by the Marqués de Guadalcanal Foundation. The award was presented to Prof. Areilza by Iñigo Méndez de Vigo, Minister of Education, Culture and Sports, at a ceremony in Madrid on Wednesday, 18th October.

Now in its seventh edition, the Antonio Fontán Journalism Award recognises works published in the press, radio and audiovisual media related to the defence of values of freedom, justice, equality and political pluralism. “It is an honour to receive this award,” commented Prof. Areilza. “Antonio Fontán fought for freedom of expression and freedom of the press. He was a liberal who played a key role in the Spanish Transition as President of the Senate in the constituent assembly and as Minister of Territorial Administrations. The journalism award that bears his name recognises the defense of constitutional values.”

Prof. Areilza thanked the Minister of Education for his remarks about Antonio Fontán and about his grandfather, José María de Areilza, whom the award winner described as “a Europeanist, a writer and the person who inspired my literary calling”.

In winning the Antonio Fontán Journalism Award, José M. de Areilza follows in the footsteps of Mario Vargas Llosa, who won the award in 2014 for articles in El País; Valentí Puig, for articles in La Vanguardia; Javier Gomá Lanzón, for work published in El País; Ignacio Camacho, for work published in ABC; and Esperanza Aguirre, for articles in ABC and other media outlets.
