Marc Ortiz, a student of ESADE’s Bachelor of Business Administration-BBA programme, was the Spanish finalist chosen to travel to Singapore for the latest edition of the Unilever Future Leaders’ League. Some 70 contestants from 21 different countries participated in the finals in Singapore, out of the more than 20,000 students from 300 universities who participated overall. For Marc, ‘Being the only Spaniard to reach the finals offered me a great opportunity to get to know, from a local perspective, a wide variety of cultures and ways of working.’

Ortiz was chosen from among five Spanish semi-finalists after submitting a practical and innovative solution for the brand Knorr regarding marketing ideas linked to sustainability strategies. Along with his two French teammates, the 22-year-old went on to place 4th in the league’s final round in Singapore. This time, Unilever asked the finalists to seek and devise strategies for the brand TRESemmé.

According to Marc, ‘We are our own CEOs. The key is never to stop being proactive and working towards what you want.’ Looking back on his experience, the ESADE student emphasized that in the Future Leaders’ League he was able to speak to the senior leaders at Unilever about leadership, sustainability and new opportunities in the FMCG industry. ‘I am proud to think that we are part of an era that wants to change the world through action, rather than merely seeking personal profit’, he noted.

Future Leaders’ League 2014 finals

The four-day gathering of talented young people in Singapore was a problem-solving forum through which Unilever offered students and recent graduates the chance to propose ideas and develop their vision as future leaders based on case studies and lessons taught by leading experts.

In Singapore, the teams competed before leaders from Unilever, but they also discussed key issues, such as sustainability, responsible business and leadership with a purpose.
