Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Iberia at Matins Esade: ‘Our goal is to be carbon neutral by 2040’
‘Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Iberia’s main goal is to be carbon neutral by 2040. To do this, we aim to reduce emissions across our value chain by 30% by 2030’, said Ana Callol, Vice President, Public Affairs, Communications and Sustainability (PACS), at Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Iberia (which includes Spain, Portugal and Andorra), and Pedro Vinhas, Vice President, Customer Service and Supply Chain for Iberia and Benelux at Coca-Cola Europacific Partners, at a new session of Matins Esade.
To this end, the company has developed a long-term incentive plan that includes emissions reduction targets and engaging with suppliers, encouraging 100% of key suppliers to set their own science-based emissions reduction targets and use 100% renewable electricity by 2023.
At the Matins Esade session, the executives explained that most of the company’s greenhouse gas emissions are linked to packaging (41%), followed by refrigeration equipment (23%).
Recycling and water resources
According to Callol and Vinhas, another of the company’s main goals is for all of its packaging to be 100% recyclable by 2025 (the figure currently stands at 99.7%), as well for 50% of the content of its packaging to be made of recycled materials this year (the current share is around 25%).
With regard to packaging, they stressed, ‘We are committed to promoting a circular economy, where 100% of our packaging is collected, reused or recycled.’ To achieve the goal of carbon-neutral packaging, they highlighted the importance of reducing unnecessary plastic and making packaging lighter. ‘One of the most visible initiatives is the elimination of plastic rings, and one of the initiatives posing the most challenges for us, both internally and externally, is lightweighting cans’, said Vinhas.
As for transport, to achieve neutrality, the company will seek to optimise loads and routes, use alternative fuels and rail, and expand its warehouses.
At the session, the executives also underscored the role of water and water resources, one of the companies’ main inputs. In this regard, they stressed the need for optimisation and reuse. ‘We assess the vulnerability of our water sources, develop mitigation plans and review them every five years’, they explained.
