"Decent Housing, Beyond a Roof". Indicator of the Decent Housing Observatory
The report "Decent Housing, Beyond a Roof. Indicator of the Decent Housing Observatory", produced by Esade's Decent Housing Observatory, an initiative of Esade’s Institute for Social Innovation, focuses on the development of a decent housing indicator aimed at assessing housing conditions in urban areas.
The goal of this report is to provide a practical and effective tool to diagnose and highlight precarious housing conditions. Having a roof over one's head is not enough to ensure the right to decent housing. Housing stability can be threatened by legal uncertainties or by failing to meet the basic standards necessary to ensure the well-being of its occupants. Inadequate housing conditions may stem from the physical deterioration of buildings, the changing needs of residents, issues related to self-built homes, or the occupation of vacant properties, particularly in contexts where housing systems fail to guarantee decent living conditions.
Through in-depth interviews, forums, and focus groups, this report examines the key challenges in housing, offering essential insights to enrich the debate and better guide the necessary actions by public administrations, businesses, social organizations, and society at large to address this issue.
This indicator seeks to advance toward a more equitable society by ensuring that housing meets the necessary standards for both individual and collective well-being.
Esade's Decent Housing Observatory, part of the Institute for Social Innovation, is supported by and collaborates with Fotocasa, Leroy Merlin, and Neinor Homes.
