Interview with Josep M. Lozano: “The challenge of CSR is no longer to define itself, but to convince decision-makers”
Philosopher, academic, and promoter of critical thinking in the business world, Josep Maria Lozano, Emeritus Professor at the Department of Social Sciences at ESADE, is one of the clearest and most thoughtfully critical voices on the evolution of Corporate Social Responsibility in Spain. His career, which began in the late 1980s when “CSR as an academic subject seemed somewhat unusual,” has been defined by a consistent effort to build bridges between ethics, business, and society.
In this interview, Lozano shares a broad, committed, and realistic perspective. “Corporate Social Responsibility emerged at a time when expectations were low, and any progress was significant,” he recalls. But he warns that, over time, “very different and even contradictory things have been done in its name,” which has led to a certain trivialization of the concept: “I have the feeling that its definition has weakened over time.”
