The pandemic, as well as other global macro-trends, is having a significant impact on the non-profit sector and organisations are facing significant challenges. The uncertainties of the current situation and the accelerated pace of change make it more difficult to anticipate the future and the impacts of actions and decisions. These factors have implications for leaders of social organisations, especially when considering how they can continue their work in such uniquely uncertain circumstances. In this environment, how should NGOs evolve to fulfil their mission, achieve the desired impact, and respond to the causes they serve? What role should the sector play? How is it valued and what do others expect from the sector?

The publication of ‘The Role of NGOs’ is the result of work carried out during the 2020-2021 academic year, within the framework of the Esade-PwC Social Leadership Program, and responds to the above questions, as well as providing guidance, theoretical and practical content, and examples of changing NGOs.
