The Central American University of Nicaragua (UCA) has condemned an attack that unfolded on Wednesday, 30th May, when an armed group targeted protesters marching towards the main entrance of the UCA campus. According to a statement released by the Nicaraguan academic institution, UCA volunteers and security personnel rushed to help protesters take shelter on the campus and provided first aid to numerous victims injured in the attack.

Yesterday’s incident comes on the heels of another attack that took place last Sunday, in which the campus’s security services were targeted by mortar fire. No one was hurt in that incident.

ESADE Business & Law School, like many other Jesuit universities, centres and networks, would like to express its support and solidarity with the UCA, with which it has long maintained various collaboration agreements. Over the course of nearly four decades, more than 40 ESADE faculty members have taught on the UCA campus in Nicaragua and 190 ESADE students have participated in social cooperation projects in various parts of the country.

ESADE joins the UCA in calling for “justice for the dozens killed in incidents in the Nicaraguan capital in April and May” as well as “a democracy that guarantees true peace and development for all Nicaraguan citizens, a dream which today is at serious risk due to the irresponsibility of the current misgovernment”.
