The global financial crisis has marked a new direction for companies competing in global markets. Governments are playing an increasingly important role in global society, as evidenced by currency warfare and increasing market regulation. Emerging countries – which, less affected by the recession, tapped into the world economy as developed countries were entering a downturn – are claiming their place in global governance. Their leading companies not only compete in but lead international markets in some very important sectors. The purpose of this refresher session is to review the changes that have occurred at the global level over the past decade and discuss the challenges and opportunities that these changes entail for businesses.
