- Institute for Social Innovation Annual Conference "Integrating CSR into business strategy in times of crisis"
-
-
December 10th 2008, ESADE Madrid
Two events as part of the Madrid Annual Conference:
Introduction and welcome by Ignasi Carreras, Director of the ESADE Institute for Social Innovation and Daniel Arenas, Head of Research at the ESADE Institute for Social Innovation. The main conference was led by Cranfield School of Management’s Andrew KakabadseProfessor of International Development Management. The professor delivered a lecture on Leadership, boardroom excellence and the responsible director.
Later the round table debate was held on ‘CSR, Competitiveness and the Economic Crisis’ and the study on ‘CSR and Competitiveness’ was also presented. Taking part in this event, were: Ignasi Carreras, Director, ESADE Institute for Social Innovation Marc Vilanova, Researcher, ESADE Institute for Social Innovation Isabel Rubio, Director, Corporate Social Responsibility, Bancaja
The conference focused on corporate social responsibility’s role in companies within the context of the crisis. One of the main conclusions to be drawn from the conference is that CSR will only progress if it is introduced into company strategy. Ignasi Carreras said that corporate social responsibility will help companies that have already put resources into CSR, given that CSR ingredients (risk management, good governance, transparency, etc.) may result in these companies emerging strengthened from the crisis. Also, the Director of Corporate Social Responsibility at Bancaja, Isabel Rubio, commented "If CSR had been stronger in the long term, we wouldn’t be in the current crisis". She then went on to add "Transparency is one of the most important tools to recover lost confidence".
The University of Cranfield’s Professor Andrew Kakabadse reflected on the characteristics that Board members and company presidents should ideally possess. He mentioned that, after analysing a large number of cases, he had failed to reach a clear conclusion on these issues, as they "depend on the company". According to Kakabadse, the best company president would be the one who followed six general rules, and who: values the Board; clearly defines boundaries; analyses proposals; takes into account the influence of performance; shows integrity and participatory vision; and develops the Board of Directors.

- Annual Conference of the Institute for Social Innovation, Integrating CSR into business strategy in times of crisis
-
-
17 November 2008, ESADEForum, Barcelona
The Annual Conference included 3 events: • A round table on "Key factors for integrating CSR into business strategy", presentation of the study "Observatorio 2008 de la Inversión Socialmente Responsable", and the round table "Further trends in corporate social action".
The conference was chaired by: Ignasi Carreras, ESADE Institute for Social Innovation director
Speakers were: Itziar Castelló , Institute for Social Innovation researcher Xavier Carbonell, Director of Social Responsibility at Mango Angel Pes, Deputy General Manager, Corporate Responsibility and Brand at "la Caixa" Laura Albareda, Institute for Social Innovation researcher Lourdes Urriolagoitia, Institute for Social Innovation researcher Esther Trujillo, Vice President of Sustainable Development at Sol Melià David Camps,,Fundraising Manager of Intermon Oxfam
Ignasi Carreras announced that the affect of the crisis on CSR in companies would vary, with businesses fostering it as the latest "fad" being most affected. Conversely, where CSR had been an intrinsic part of company development, the crisis "would be a chance to stand out from the crowd and win back the trust of consumers and shareholders".
Referring to the study "Further trends in corporate social action" based on the work of eight companies (Acciona, Abertis, BBVA, Ferrovial, Inditex, Mapfre, Repsol YPF and Telefónica), he concluded that to achieve real reverberation and social impact there had to be six key factors for good management of social action: alignment, focus, being active, collaboration, top management involvement and formalising the issue. The companies analysed all felt a specialist strategic partner was essential. They had switched from giving to receiving, working jointly with third sector organisations and collaborating directly in managing their own project.

- Presentation of the study "Observatorio 2008 de la ISR"
-
-
13 November 2008, ESADEFORUM Madrid
Speakers were: Ignasi Carreras, ESADE's Institute for Social Innovation director Antonio Ballabriga, BBVA Director of Corporate Responsability and Reputation Laura Albareda, Institute for Social Innovation researcher Daniel Arenas, Institute for Social Innovation research coordinator Álvaro Elices, Asset Management BBVA Director. Gestora del BBVA Luís Peña Kaiser, CEO, Fonditel Pensiones, EGFP, SA. Carlos Bravo, CC.OO. Joint Head of the Pension Plans and Funds Area
According to the presentation of the study Observatorio 2008 de la Inversión Socialmente Responsable, responsible investment in Spain is still only marginal. While CRI had made great strides in international financial markets, in Spain the movement was in retreat. The current figure for funds managed with CRI criteria represents 0.3% of capital invested, compared with last year's 0.48%. However, there was still room for optimism. Of the nineteen SRI funds in Spain, seven had positive returns (37%) while among the hundred or so general fund categories, scarcely twenty had managed to maintain positive returns (20%). "This data proves that CRI funds give better returns than their traditional counterparts in crisis situations", claimed the authors of the study. Institutional investors like pension funds were proving to be the way forward for growth of responsible investment. Carreras also explained that the Spanish State haad become the top institutional investor by managing its Social Security Reserve Fund on sustainable criteria.

- Forum on Corporate Reputation "Creating value through stakeholder relationship"
-
-
4 November 2008, ESADEFORUM Barcelona
This event was chaired by the Institute for Social Innovation director, Ignasi Carreras, and speakers were: Sergi Loughney, General Secretary, Corporate Reputation Forum Edoardo Gai, Director of Sustainability Services, SAM GROUP Alberto Lafuente, University of Zaragoza Professor and Director of the CSR annual report of the Fundación Alternativas José María Lozano, ESADE professor and Senior Researcher in CSR in the Institute for Social Innovation Ángel Alloza, Corporate Reputation Forum José Carlos Martínez, Corporate Reputation Forum Diego Torres, Partner-Director of Strategy Innovation lab. and ESADE lecturer
One of the main conclusions of the Conference on Corporate Reputation was that a company's reputation would become one of its major assets in surviving the crisis. Up to now, protection of the environment had been a top concern of business interest groups. But experts now think that "quality employment will gather force due to the economic crisis".
