Biography
Xavier Mendoza is an Associate Professor in the Strategy and General Management department at ESADE Business School, Ramon Llull University, which he joined in 1982. He has served as director general of ESADE Foundation which encompasses a Business School, a Law School and an Executive Education centre with campuses in Barcelona and Madrid 2022-2024. He also served as dean of ESADE Business School 2000-2008 and as deputy director general of ESADE Foundation 2008-2011.
Throughout his academic career he has taught Executive, MBA, MSc and BBA students in the areas of competitive and corporate strategy as well as international business. As an academic intrapreneur, he was one of the founding members and director of the Public Management Institute today known as EsadeGov in the mid-1980s. After stepping down as dean, he was one of the founding members and director of the Observatory of Spanish Multinational Companies 2011-2018.
His primary research interests focus on corporate strategy, firm internationalization processes and strategic management of multinational enterprises. His research has been published in international peer-reviewed book chapters and journals such as Asia Pacific Journal of Management, Business Research Quarterly, Corporate Governance, Cross Cultural & Strategic Management, International Business Review, Long Range Planning and Journal of Business Research, among others. He is a member of the Academic Advisory Council of the Emerging Markets Institute, SC Johnson College of Business, Cornell University.
Xavier has actively engaged in the activities of leading international academic associations. Currently he is a member of the BSIS Steering Committee at the EFMD Global and a member of the Advisory Council of the International Federation of Scholarly Associations of Management IFSAM. Previously, he was a member of the Executive Committee 2008-2017 and President 2015-2017 of the Business Association of Latin American Studies BALAS who appointed him BALAS Fellow in 2023. He was an elected member of the Board of Directors of AACSB-International 2008-2011 after serving in its Accreditation Committee for six years. As dean of ESADE Business School he was one of the founders of the European Academy of Business in Society EABIS and served as member and Academic Vice-Chair of its Supervisory Board 2002-2008. He also was a member of the Executive Board of the Community of European Management Schools CEMS, and of the Deans & Directors Committee of the European Foundation for Management Development EFMD Global.
Xavier has extensive experience in institutional accreditation processes and has participated in more than 20 accreditation visits to renowned business schools around the world on behalf of AACSB and EQUIS EFMD Global. Prior to his appointment as Dean, he combined his academic activities with strategy consulting over a period of 15 years. In addition to working for Spanish and multinational companies in different industries, he also advised several public administrations and NGOs in Spain.
