The Barcelona Workshop on Global Governance is a venue for the study of global governance – its structure, effects, and problems – from an interdisciplinary perspective, bringing together scholarship from international relations, law, sociology, anthropology, political theory, public administration and history.
The workshop is organized by ESADEgeo (ESADE Business School’s Center for Global Economy and Geopolitics) and IBEI (Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals).
The seminars on War & Peace in the 21st Century are held at the Palau de Pedralbes in January and are organized by CIDOB under the auspices of Barcelona City Council in collaboration with ESADEgeo (Center for Global Economy and Geopolitics) and sponsored by Obra Social “la Caixa”.
Throughout these years, we have held high-level closed-door seminars bringing leading international figures together with over a hundred relevant representatives of the Spanish civil society. The previous seminars gathered high-level experts, intellectuals and policy makers who discussed intensively on issues such as the peace process in Colombia, the Iran nuclear deal, the transatlantic relations, the Arab Spring, world governance or Russia and the EU.
Funded by the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 program, GLOBE addresses the strategic priorities identified in the EU Global Strategy. The project will recommend strategies on how the EU might promote enhanced global governance and deal with future challenges and gridlocks.
The project, coordinated by Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals (IBEI), will be driven mainly from Barcelona, where three of the ten partners are located: ESADE, Barcelona Institute of Global Health (ISGlobal, centre promoted by "la Caixa") and IBEI. During the kick-off meeting, held in Barcelona on February 4 & 5, 2019, Javier Solana, president of ESADE Center for Global Economy and Geopolitics (ESADEgeo), analysed today’s political, social and economic challenges for the EU and the world. The kick-off meeting is only the first step of a long-term endeavour that will run for 42 months.
The annual energy meeting, organised by ESADEgeo –together with KIC-InnoEnergy, Boston Consulting Group, Aspen Institute and the European Commission– is a venue to discuss the geopolitics and the global business of energy. Currently on its VII edition, over 200 top global business leaders and policy-makers attend the meeting
At previous editions, we have had the pleasure of hosting world energy experts such as European Energy Commissioner Günther Oettinger; Carlos Pascual, Special Envoy and Coordinator for International Energy Affairs with the US State Department; Maria van der Hoeven, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA); EU Climate Action and Energy Commissioner Miguel Arias Cañete; Josu Jon Imaz, Repsol’s CEO; Tatiana Mitrova, Director of the SKOLKOVO Energy Centre; Arunabha Ghosh, founder-CEO of the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW); or Wang Tao, nonresident scholar in the Energy and Climate Program based at the Carnegie–Tsinghua Center for Global Policy.
