Transformar con éxito las ONG. El liderazgo del cambio
The Institute for Social Innovation and the PricewaterhouseCoopers Foundation present their study containing a model for successfully transforming the third sector.
The ‘Leading Change in NGOs' conference was held in Barcelona on Monday, 5th July, coinciding with the launch of the book Transformar con éxito las ONG. El liderazgo del cambio [unofficial translation: Successfully Transforming NGOs. The Leadership of Change]. Along with the study presented, this book launch was part of the ESADE-PwC Social Leadership Programme, and organised with the support of the PricewaterhouseCoopers Foundation.
The book focuses on an issue that is fundamental for the sustainability of any organisation: How to lead and manage change? Although every organisation should know how to change successfully, this need is even more crucial for non-profit organisations: How can a static entity promote social change? How will an NGO, which is incapable of shifting its focus to cover changing social needs and environments, achieve its mission?
The conference
The first part of the conference was attended by Carlos Losada, Director General of ESADE, and Carlos Mas, President of PricewaterhouseCoopers Spain. In addition, the book's three authors, Ignasi Carreras, Maria Iglesias and Maria Sureda, presented its main objectives and findings.
The round table held in the second part of the event focused on three of the eleven change leadership cases detailed in the book. Those taking part in the discussion included Consuelo Crespo, President of UNICEF Spain, Carmen García de Andrés, Director of Fundación Tomillo and Montserrat Tohà, Director of Fundació IReS.
We would like to thank the event's 150-plus attendees for their interest, along with all those who followed the event live via the Institute for Social Innovation's website.
The book
The study has enabled us to develop our own model of change leadership. The model divides the process of change into three stages: creating change; promoting change; institutionalising change. Based on adapting the Kotter model to the non-profit sector, the main key factors have been identified in each stage. The study also includes a list of the ten key elements to be taken into consideration in order for NGOs to develop successful transformation processes.
The third sector should be able to regenerate itself continuously, in order to achieve maximum impact through its mission, by adopting a form of leadership that includes this transformative and inspiring component.
