  • Through the Looking Glass: Understanding a Complex Relationship between Knowledge and Action.
  • Title of the Ph.D. project: Through the Looking Glass: Understanding a Complex Relationship between Knowledge and Action.

Name of the Researcher: María Elena Bou Alameda

    Supervisor: Alfons Sauquet

Brief description of the Ph.D. project, objectives & findings: Drawing on the study of knowledge and action as a reference, this research explores how practitioners in two different firms perform their practice, knowing and acting simultaneously. It argues that types of knowledge, activities, individuals and context are interwoven at the moment of acting. However, this relationship is not static. The empirical work in a local labour placement company and in a multinational consultancy firm shows that practitioners resort to a host of different expressions of knowledge (or bundle of knowledge) when acting. Therefore, the prevailing role of explicit knowledge and the need for being a precedent in order to be applied is called into question. The empirical work also reveals that the bundle of knowledge is not static. It evolves over time and at the same time the prevailing type of knowledge varies depending on the type of practice and the practitioner's level of expertise. Therefore, the results underscore the fact that the relationship between knowledge and action is more dynamic and that both interplay simultaneously. Finally, this research shows that formal company categorisations (senior/junior) describe different practices rather than correspond to differential stocks of formal knowledge. This means that even when experts and novices apparently seem to be doing the same job, their actions are different as they are constituted through different combinations of knowledge types and orders of relevance. These results seem to point toward the fact that the essence of expertise resides in the expert's ability to reframe. He is able to reconstruct practice, whether by reframing his tasks or the overarching context.

  • The role of corporate culture in a relationship marketing oriented company: The NH case
  • Title of the Ph.D. project: The role of corporate culture in a relationship marketing oriented company: The NH case

Name of the Researcher: Oriol Iglesias

    Supervisors: Alfons Sauquet, Jordi Montaña

Brief description of the Ph.D. project, objectives & findings: Relationship marketing is a new approach to marketing that requires a change in the corporate culture of the firm in order to be implemented in a strategic level. But, although many authors defend that the corporate culture of a firm has an extraordinary impact on the success of a relationship marketing strategy, there are no studies about the main features of the corporate culture of relational firms. So, this research is interested in discovering the main characteristics of the corporate culture of relational firms.

  • The role of written communication in managing an organisational change
  • Title of the Ph.D. project: The role of written communication in managing an organisational change

Name of the Researcher: Tricia Smith

    Supervisors: Eduard Bonet, Geoffrey Jordan

Brief description of the Ph.D. project, objectives & findings: The thesis showed that in-company texts (defined as a a novel subsection of organisational discourse) perform many roles in promoting and managing change and that the exchange of written texts is a necessary component of change. The archive of texts is a unique collection of real-time writing from insiders and consultants which tell the story of the change process as it unfolded, through the analysis of complex textualisation. The archive also revealed new uses of technology and textual production.

  • Title of the Ph.D. project: The sustainability of Continous Process Improvement in Public Administration. A study in Spanish Municipalities.

Name of the researcher: Manuel Francisco Suárez Barraza

    Supervisor: Juan Ramis Pujol

Brief description of the Ph.D. project, objectives & findings: The logic of updating and improving public management by applying Continuous Process Improvement (CPI) and other TQM techniques was acquired by certain Spanish city authorities in the late 80's and early 90's, all in order to enhace their public service and operating processes. The question rise of this is How can local governments sustain CPI? The findings of this thesis present that sustainability of the improvements can be achieved via a series of paths of sustainability. Each path to sustainability consists of a series of evolving phases developed by means of CPI improvement activities. Among other contributions.
