ESADE is a non-profit foundation

Because ESADE is a non-profit foundation, its mission to transform society is part of its reason for being. This condition has a financial impact: ESADE does not distribute dividends, and any surplus it generates is reinvested in its educational programmes.

High costs

The cost of education is very high, and it leaves little room to manoeuvre in terms of financial management. Each year, ESADE addresses this limitation with a rigorous financial policy that guarantees that resources are applied efficiently in the development of its project. As a result of this policy, ESADE has been able to position itself at the international level.

Contrarily to public universities, private institutions must develop creative formulas for finding sources of extraordinary financing. As the market becomes more competitive and global, the ability to obtain financing will mark the difference between schools.

The case of the United States

In the United States, most of the top-tier schools that compete with ESADE receive annual donations from alumni and organisations. These donations have become a key source of revenue for the schools. The major American business schools have created endowments ranging in size from $200 million to $2 billion. They use these endowments to finance investments in research or to recruit talent, which translates into a sustainable competitive advantage. Harvard, for example, has an endowment that generates more revenue than the sum total of ESADE’s income.

The case of some European schools

Following in the footsteps of the American schools, some European business schools have begun highly ambitious fundraising projects for attract the best talent, to promote research and increase its endowment:

> Insead (France): campaign to raise 200 million euros.
> HEC (France): campaign to raise 100 million euros.
> Bocconi (Italy): campaign to raise 100 million euros.
