Living Barcelona

Olympic inspiration since 1992

Historically, Barcelona has been a vibrant breeding ground for the creative arts. World-renowned artists such as Picasso, Dali, Miro and the legendary architect Gaudi have all found their inspiration in Barcelona's artistically conducive ambience and light. The modern-day city is a fashion hub, with some of the world's premier brands originating from the Catalan capital, including major international successes such as Mango, Custo, Desigual and Pronovias. Naturally, some of the world's leading advertising agencies are also based in the city. With a major car design centre and home to a cluster of biotech and pharmaceutical companies, it is safe to say that Barcelona has established itself firmly on the international industrial stage. Combining a fantastic climate with such a strong cultural and commercial range of possibilities, it's easy to see why a year spent studying for a cutting-edge Master in Barcelona is an exciting prospect.

Nevertheless, Barcelona has not rested on its laurels; with unparalleled logistics and communications, the principal Mediterranean seaport is branching out in new directions.

Recently, we have seen an influx of research and development initiatives, including the collaboration between IBM and UPC (Polytechnic University of Catalonia) on the new generation of supercomputers and the inauguration of the Laboratory of Synchrotronic Light, considered to be the most important scientific installation in Southern Europe.

Pioneering medical research centres in regenerative stem cell therapy and human genome sequencing all have headquarters here. And, as part of its SMOS mission, the European Space Agency has promoted the expert centre on Radiometric Calibration of Oceanic Salinity at the Institute of Sea Sciences in Barcelona.

From an entrepreneurial perspective, ideal management services and innovative start-up resources are available through Barcelona Activa, a groundbreaking initiative set up by Barcelona City Hall. This offers training, consulting and online company start-up services, to name but a few. One could even say entrepreneurship is a developing art in Barcelona.

Accomodation

Finding an apartment, shared flat or halls of residence that meets student budgets - not to mention being close to ESADE - will also need some consideration. Almost all MSc Programme in Management participants opt for accommodation in the centre of Barcelona and travel out to the Campus by metro.

Visa

Before coming to study here, overseas students should pay careful attention to what visa requirements are necessary to stay in Spain for an extended period, and should check this with the Spanish embassy in their country.

Estimated living expenses

Estimated monthly budget for single students:

Accommodation (shared flat): €400*
Utilities: €80
Groceries: €200
ESADE Cafeteria: €115
Transport: €60
Sports: €45
Misc. Expenses: €300
Monthly Budget: €1,200

*The cost of a shared flat may vary from €300-550 depending on location, room size, etc.

Please bear in mind that this is only a very general estimate, given that how much you spend is up to you and Barcelona can be as inexpensive or costly as your individual tastes dictate.
