Getting into retailing

When you want to sell directly to end customers

This programme has been designed so that, on completion, participants:

  • Should be competent in strategic management and in the key operational variables involved in this area. Ultimately, participants should have a command of the essentials to enter either into retailing or to redirect their retailing activity, if they are already selling to the public.
  • Should have acquired skills to create and manage innovative business models, given that chances of achieving profitability in retailing by copying what others are already doing are few and far between.

To achieve these objectives, it is necessary for participants to have similar profiles while coming from sectors that are as varied as possible. The reason for this is very simple: We learn from each other, especially in terms of learning different skills, and that is why participants are required to have a demonstrated level of experience in business management.

  • Senior executives responsible for their company's entry into the world of retailing (or for strategically exploring such a possibility).
  • Retail chain managers who aim to refresh their skills and keep abreast of the most innovative methods in order to develop their network of stores.
  • Owners or general managers of medium-sized companies already operating branches in retailing and who are aiming to explore new and innovative business formulas.

As the programme’s priority target audience is executives of companies that are considering moving into retailing, there will be a short initial block on marketing channel diagnosis and strategy.

  • Devising the road to market
  • Specific retailing management

This is not a "course", but rather an opportunity to learn and explore specific retailing systems, beyond the pressures of daily work.
Given the type of participants and the nature of the programme, it is essential that a stimulating learning environment - pleasant yet demanding - should be created which encourages the discovery of ideas and their internalisation.

As a result, the methods to be used are:

  • Active explanation sessions on methods, delivered by professors and experts
  • Mental maps
  • Role playing
  • Selected reading materials
  • Short exercises
  • Case studies (prepared prior to sessions)
  • Presentations from executive guest speakers
  • Full-session group discussions
  • In-store learning session
  • Group project (optional)
  • Using programme website
  • Accessing the on-line or ESADE library

As is customary in this type of senior manager specialisation programme, a minimum of dedication and input will be demanded of participants, for their own benefit and that of their fellow participants.
