The telephone interview
Employers use telephone interviews as a way of identifying and recruiting candidates for employment. Phone interviews are often used to screen candidates in order to narrow the pool of applicants who will be invited for in-person interviews. They are also used as way to minimize the expenses involved in interviewing out-of-town candidates.
Before the contact: Indicate clearly in you CV your contact details. Specify if they might change in the near future or if you will not be in the country during a period of time. Make sure your voicemail greeting includes your name or your phone number.
When you miss the contact: If a recruiter leaves a voice mail, return the call as soon as possible. Indicate your complete name and that you are returning the call regarding the X position you applied for. If you cannot reach the recruiter, leave a voice mail or sent an email including your name, the position you applied for and the contact information for the next business day.
The contact: Interviews may last from 5 minutes to an hour. If you are not ready for the interview or the time is not convenient, ask politely if you could talk another time and suggest some alternatives.
