Networking Tips

  • Be prepared: keep business cards of people you meet and follow up
  • Ask for Information, not a Job. Asking for a job can put people on the defensive and close doors immediately. The best way of using contacts is to ask for information (see Informational Interviews).
  • Focus your Conversations: Use each conversation to get the most information possible. Give your contact a brief summary of your objectives and experience. Then ask specific questions that will provide you with helpful information. Get realistic feedback on your goals and your CV.
  • Networking is a give and take relationship: look for opportunities to reciprocate. Offer something of value. Listen to what your contacts say and respond with helpful information if you can.
  • Keep Your Promises. Adhere to 20-30 time commitment. If you promise to call, do it. If the person is difficult to reach, keep trying - it is your responsibility.
  • Always follow up with a Thank You letter. You should send it by email or paper within 24 hours of each meeting.
  • Stay in Touch. Keep your contacts informed about the progress of your job search through brief calls or notes. To keep the relationship beneficial for both parties, keep communication consistent. Look out for interesting articles or information that you can send to your networking contacts.
  • Join professional groups to get to know people with the same interests as you.
  • Start early! Don't wait until you are looking for a job to start networking.
