Informational Interviews
Informational Interviews are one of the most effective ways of gaining an insight into a company or field. Informational interviewing is a networking method that can be an excellent source of information and opportunities - for you to meet key professionals, gather career related insight, investigate career options, learn more about specific industries, companies and jobs, receive advice on job search techniques, and find referrals to more professionals.
Successfully arranging and conducting informational interviews means maintaining the proper balance between your main agenda (finding a job) and the opportunity to learn first-hand about the industry, company and job in which you are interested.
Arranging Informational Interviews
You can set up informational interviews by directly contacting people in the company/industry of interest.
Generally a phone call is a good starting point. If the person is senior or living abroad, an email may be a more appropriate way of starting. If you contact people by email and don't receive a reply, always follow up after a few days with a telephone call.
When setting up the interview, briefly introduce yourself and clearly state the reasons why you want to meet. Request a meeting of 30 minutes at their office at the time that is most convenient for them. Follow up to confirm the appointment.
Remember to stress that this is not a job interview so that the individual does not feel pressured. Be sure to mention your link to them in your initial call or correspondence e.g. alumni, friend, professor, etc.
